First Basketball League with APD's Police Activities League (PALS)
This spring, 250+ Club members participated in the first Club-wide basketball league with Austin Police officers. The season kicked off with an opening ceremony and drills in March, and came to a close in May. Congratulations to our Clubs at LBJ H.S; Bedicheck M.S; and Overton Elementary for earning 1st Place in the first season's championship! More importantly than winning or losing though, is the positive impact the program is having on our kids and how they view police officers. Club Director Leo Santana says, "It's been great working with APD on the PALs league. Officer Eric Oakmon has a big heart. It's great for our kids to see that he's an officer, a coach, a dad, a mentor and an all around great guy. Many of our kids used to run when they saw the police coming. Thanks to this program, we are seeing high fives and hugs between our kids and police officers."
"Somebody" Spring Luncheon with Eddie Reese- May 12th
Eddie Reese, the winningest coach in NCAA history for any sport, will speak at the "Somebody" Spring Luncheon. Festivities will include a presenation by Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year, Tyra Roland, performances by Club members and special awards. 700 guests are expected to attend, including several dignitaries.
